  • Construction Fatalities (Added 17/04/2012)
Statistics released by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), at the end of last year show that although the construction industry only accounts for about 5% of British employees, it accounts for 27% of fatal injuries and 9% of reported major injuries.
In 2010/11 there were 50 fatal injuries to workers and approximately 2.3 million working days were lost. In such an environment, managing risk at all stages is vital yet there are still a large number of sites across the UK where unsafe working practices appear to be the norm. In February, the HSE announced that its inspectors would be visiting construction sites across the country in a month-long drive to improve standards and reduce death, injury and ill health. During the first five days of the initiative, one fifth of sites visited in Merseyside and Cheshire failed safety checks. HSE inspectors issued 29 Prohibition Notices stopping work activities immediately and 15 Improvement Notices requiring changes to be made to working practices. Half of the notices related to unsafe work being carried out at height. For further information, visit http://www.hse.gov.uk/statistics/fatals.htm [story courtesy of BCIS News]

The Building Cost Information Service (BCIS) has recently reported that in the 3rd quarter of 2009, tender prices fell by 0.9% compared with the previous quarter. This is the 4th successive quarterly fall. In comparison with a year earlier, tender prices have fallen by 12.2%.

The BCIS also reports that general inflation fell by 1.3% over the year to 3rd quarter 2009. The BCIS’ forecast to the 4th quarter 2011 is that general inflation is forecast to remain between -0.5 and 3.5% with a return to growth in new work output during 2011, which may see tender prices beginning to rise again over the year. We believe this will depend a lot on whether the Public sector funding is provided at the levels promised to date. We’ll keep you posted!
