  • Steel prices (Added 29/05/2010)
It has been announced that steel prices are to be linked to the new iron ore pricing mechanism. This means a possible increase of between 20% and 30% in product prices!!! This could well seriously hinder signs of recovery, especially in the new build office development sector which is one of the main markets for steel.

  • Renewable Energy Feed-In Tariffs finalised (Added 03/02/2010)
This week saw the Government finally confirming the Feed-In Tariff rates for Renewable Energy. More information here!

  • Tender prices continuing to fall! (Added 03/02/2010)
The Building Cost Information Service (BCIS) has recently reported that in the 3rd quarter of 2009, tender prices fell by 0.9% compared with the previous quarter. This is the 4th successive quarterly fall. In comparison with a year earlier, tender prices have fallen by 12.2%.

The BCIS also reports that general inflation fell by 1.3% over the year to 3rd quarter 2009. The BCIS’ forecast to the 4th quarter 2011 is that general inflation is forecast to remain between -0.5 and 3.5% with a return to growth in new work output during 2011, which may see tender prices beginning to rise again over the year. We believe this will depend a lot on whether the Public sector funding is provided at the levels promised to date. We’ll keep you posted!

  • Renewable Energy Grants (Added 03/02/2010)
Funding has become available from the Government for industrial, commercial and community sectors to assist towards the cost of installing biomass heating systems. Up to 40% grants are available for the difference in cost between a biomass boiler and its fossil fuel alternative. More information here. In order to be eligible for the grant, the boiler (or Combined Heat and Power - CHP Plant) must be fuelled by such materials as wood pellets, purpose-grown energy crops or similar materials.
