- *TENDER PRICES UPDATE*
According to the Building Cost Information Service (BCIS), tender prices fell 2.4% during the first quarter of this year. In the previous quarter, tender prices had actually increased by 2.1% compared with a year earlier. Although the first quarter results indicate a down-trend, the BCIS urge caution that this could merely be a blip and anticipates that tender prices will rise during the next quarter.
Forecasting through to the 2nd Quarter of 2010, the BCIS reports that there will be a fall in new work output in 2008 with output remaining unchanged in 2009 and increasing at around its annual long term trend rate of 2.0% in 2010. The "credit crunch" and the slowdown in economic growth are now expected to have a greater effect on construction output than first thought. However, it is also anticipated by the BCIS that the public non housing and infrastructure sectors will both grow over the next 3 years, with particularly strong growth in 2008 and 2009. Tender prices are expected to rise ahead of general inflation over the first year of the forecast.
- *DEMOLITION BOOST*
Following the Government's scrapping of the Empty Rates Relief on 1st April 2008, this has led to a huge rise in demand for demolition contractors. Although the Government has warned owners about purposefully damaging their properties in order to make them unusable, there is no law to prevent the demolition of a building, unless the property is Listed.
- Redline Karting is officially opened
On Friday 30th November 2007, the new indoor karting centre at Caernarfon was officially opened by the First Minister Rhodri Morgan AM. Advent Project Management were project managers, quantity surveyors and CDM Co-ordinators for this exciting new £1m attraction for Caernarfon. - New Assistanr PM/QS
Advent are pleased to announce that from 1st November, Dylan Wyn Evans joined the Practice as Assistant PM/QS. Dylan's responsibilities will be to provide support to our project managers and quantity surveyors on a variety of different projects.
- Tender Prices Increasing
According to the Building Cost Information Service (BCIS), tender prices in the second quarter of 2007 rose by 5.2% compared with the same quarter in 2006. This trend is rising ahead of general inflation which stood at 4.8%. The long term forecast is that tender prices will continue to rise above trend for the remainder of 2007. Also, during the second quarter of 2007, orders and enquiries rose and contractors were expecting workload to increase for the next quarter.

- Epic walk in aid of charities
On Saturday 15th Sepember 2007, representatives of Advent Project Management Ltd went to Caban at Brynrefail to welcome Dr Robert Steel, the former secretary general of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, finished off a marathon 650 mile hike from the Scottish Highlands with a climb up and down Snowdon. His latest trek was in aid of Macmillan cancer support, Lion Heart, which is the Chartered Surveyors’ Benevolent Fund, and the Treloar Trust, providing education and skills for disabled youngsters.
When he walked down from the 3,560ft summit of the highest mountain in England and Wales, it marked the end of a journey which had taken eight weeks.
Once described as “amongst Britain’s most famous pedestrians” he reckoned he had raised £65,000 for three charities, £100 for every mile.
Before he’d set out from Balmoral Prince Philip had written to wish him well on his Ten Peaks Walk, describing it as “this daunting adventure.”
“By my reckoning that was 5p every time I raised my foot,” he said at the welcoming reception at Brynrefail, near Llanberis, the village at the foot of Snowdon.

- Advent PM and Deiniolen Band organise concert to support their friend
Over 12 months have passed since the flugel horn player, Iwan Williams, was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour, and now his friends at the Deiniolen Band, along with the people of Deiniolen, have decided to arrange a special concert to aid and support him.
Iwan grew up in the village of Deiniolen in Snowdonia, North Wales, and started playing the cornet in the village band at the age of 8, winning his first solo contest, the North Wales Solos contest, by the age of 11. By the age of 16 he had added a number of soloist prizes to his name, both locally and nationally, and he had also become a member of the National Youth Brass of Wales. Iwan’s musical career developed further when he moved to Manchester to study at the University of Salford to study under, amongst others, Professor David King, (the man responsible for Iwan’s move on to the flugel horn) a career that reached its peak when, in 2005, Iwan released his first solo CD, ‘Mellow Moments’ to great acclaim. At that time Iwan was a music teacher by profession and a member of the highly successful band, the YBS Band.
In January 2006, Iwan began to feel unwell and, after an initial diagnosis of epilepsy, further tests revealed a tumour. Iwan is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for the cancer, and as a result has been unable to work since the diagnosis and has also been unable to play his instrument.
Iwan’s friends in the Deiniolen Band decided to host an evening of light entertainment to honour and support him in this difficult time. “When we first heard of Iwan’s diagnosis, we were extremely shocked and saddened, but have been encouraged by Iwan’s show of strength and courage throughout his treatment.” Said Dylan Williams, on behalf of the band. “We feel that the time is right to stage an event like this, a very special evening, not only to provide some financial aid to Iwan and his young family, but to show the band and the village’s support to them all in what is bound to be a difficult time. Everyone connected with the Deiniolen Band are proud to be given the chance to show our support to Iwan and his family.”
The concert will take place at Theatr Seilo, Caernarfon on Saturday 6th October 2007, commencing at 7pm. Alongside the band, the evening’s entertainment will be provided by Tudur Owen (star of S4C’s Noson Lawen) as compere, Sheona White, Stuart Lingard and Gavin Saynor will be guest brass soloists (all 3 of whom were members of the YBS Band with Iwan), and the popular talents of Annette Bryn Parri (piano), John Eifion Jones (tenor), Sian Wyn Gibson (contralto) and Emyr Wyn Gibson (actor and singer). Iwan’s former tutor at Salford and former conductor at YBS, Professor David King, will also be in attendance.
Tickets are priced at £10 for adults and £5 for children and are available from the band’s secretary, Mr. Meirion Jones, on 01286 870452.
The concert is sponsored by Advent Project Management Ltd, and a huge number of local businesses have also agreed to support the event. World of Brass, the company behind Iwan’s solo CD, have also generously agreed to support the appeal. Dylan continues “The evening promises to be very special, and the band are extremely grateful to all the artists and sponsors for agreeing to support the appeal. There is something really special about the way the people of Deiniolen pull together in difficult times, and this concert is proof of that. - Name
change. The Association of Planning Supervisors has changed
its name to the Association of Project Safety because it believes
the role of the planning supervisor will be axed as a result of
the current review of the Construction (Design and Management)
Regulations. The newly titled Association has joined forces with
the Construction Confederation to promote health & safety
risk management.
